Background of the Study
Folk songs in Ika North East Local Government Area have long been an integral medium for preserving linguistic heritage and cultural narratives. These songs encapsulate indigenous vocabulary, proverbs, and historical accounts that serve as both educational tools and repositories of collective memory (Eghosa, 2023). The oral tradition embodied in folk songs plays a crucial role in transmitting language across generations, thereby reinforcing cultural identity and communal bonds (Osarhieme, 2024). In the context of rapid modernization, the preservation of folk songs is increasingly important as they counterbalance the encroachment of dominant languages. The study examines how folk songs are used in community gatherings, rituals, and educational settings to maintain linguistic continuity. It also discusses the challenges posed by modern media and urbanization, which threaten the relevance of traditional musical expressions. By critically assessing the role of folk songs in language preservation, this research contributes to broader discussions on cultural sustainability and educational innovation (Agbo, 2023).

Statement of the Problem
The decline in the practice and appreciation of folk songs in Ika North East poses a threat to indigenous language preservation. This study addresses the erosion of traditional musical expressions and the consequent loss of linguistic heritage, aggravated by modern cultural influences (Ogu, 2023).

  2. What challenges do folk songs face in contemporary society?

  3. What strategies can enhance the role of folk songs in sustaining indigenous language?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Folk songs significantly contribute to language preservation.

  2. Modernization adversely affects the practice of folk songs.

  3. Educational integration of folk songs can bolster language preservation.
